The E46 was built from 1997 to 2006 as a saloon, touring, coupe, convertible and compact. Many are now over 20 years old. The engines and chassis often hold up well, but the interior plastics do not. Sun, heat and daily use make clips brittle and cup holder mechanisms snap.

New original pieces are sometimes expensive, sold only as a full assembly, or no longer made. A 3D printed replacement fixes the one broken piece for the price of a file and a few grams of filament. This guide shows what breaks, what you can print, and how to print it so it lasts.

What breaks on a BMW E46 (and what you can print)

We sorted the 155 E46 files in our catalogue by part type. The list below shows where the problems are. Clips and covers lead, which matches what most E46 owners know: small plastic parts fail first.

Part type E46 files Typical use
Clips 21 Door trim, sill trim, dashboard trim, side skirts
Covers 18 Screw covers, terminal covers, ashtray and vent covers
Trays 12 Phone trays and storage trays
Cup holders 12 Front and rear holders, latches, repair tabs, adapters
Panels 10 Blanking and trim panels
Mounts 8 Radio and accessory mounts
Handles 8 Small interior handles
Trim 8 Trim pieces and bezels
Switches 7 Switch blanks and button covers
Brackets 5 Small holding brackets

That is 109 files in the ten biggest groups. The other 46 are one-off parts and tools, such as caps, pads and workshop helpers.

Cup holders: the classic E46 failure

The E46 cup holder is famous for breaking. The spring-loaded front unit and the rear latch both use thin plastic arms. Our library has 12 cup holder files, from full holders to small repair tabs and latches. A repair tab or latch is often enough, so you do not have to replace the whole unit.

Clips and covers: small parts, big annoyance

Door cards and sill trims rattle when one clip breaks. Screw covers and caps get lost when you work on the car. With 21 clip files and 18 cover files, this is the largest part of the E46 collection. These parts are cheap, quick to print, and you can print spares. For more on clips, read our guide on how to 3D print car clips.

Real E46 files from our designers

Every design comes from an independent designer, who is credited on the product page. Here are some real files and what their designers say about them. We report their notes; we have not fitted every part ourselves.

  • Washer fluid reservoir cap: a cap for the E46 washer tank. The designer reports an excellent friction fit when printed in PETG.
  • BMW oil filter wrench 76 mm: a tool for the oil filter housing cap (76 mm, 14 flutes, part 11421715960). It was made for the 318i M43 engine. The designer notes the same cap is listed for the E30, E36, E34 5 Series and Z3.
  • Trunk bottom support pad: tested by the designer on an E46 convertible. It will probably fit the coupe as well.
  • Front ashtray cover: a cover that closes the front ashtray. The file includes a second, hollow version that prints faster. The designer says it may need a minor correction.
  • Lightweight trunk vent cover: a light cover for the trunk vent, popular with track and project cars.
  • Rear differential bushing tools: printed pulling tools for the diff bushings. The designer reports they worked well for the front bushing, but the rear bushing was harder.

Note that the pack also includes accessory mounts, such as a Radioddity GD-77 radio holder. Not every file is a replacement part; some are tools and upgrades.

Materials, print settings and fitting for E46 parts

The designers of these E46 files did not publish fixed print settings, so use proven general settings. The right material matters more than anything else. A car cabin in summer can get hot enough to soften PLA, so PLA is a poor choice for parts that live inside the car.

Material Heat resistance Best for on the E46
PLA Low (softens around 55–60 °C) Test fits only
PETG Medium (around 70–80 °C) Caps, clips, trays, cup holder parts out of direct sun
ASA High (around 95–100 °C), UV stable Dashboard parts, covers, anything in sunlight
ABS High (around 95–100 °C) Interior parts that will be sanded or painted
PA / nylon High, tough and flexible Clips and latches that must flex

Simple settings that work

  • Layer height: 0.2 mm for most parts, 0.12–0.16 mm for small clips.
  • Walls: 3–4 perimeters. Strength in small parts comes from walls more than infill.
  • Infill: 30–50% for clips, latches and tools; 15–20% for covers and trays.
  • Orientation: print clips so the layers run along the arm, not across it. Layers split apart more easily than they bend.
  • Tools: print the oil filter wrench in PETG, ASA or nylon with high infill, and do not overtighten.

How to replace a broken E46 part in five steps

  1. Find the part. Remove the broken piece and note your body style and year. Compare it with the photos and fitment notes on the product page.
  2. Measure it. Check the key sizes with a calliper, such as clip hole diameter or cap thread size. Measure twice before you print.
  3. Choose the material. Pick PETG, ASA, ABS or nylon from the table above, based on heat and sun.
  4. Print a test. Print one copy, or a fast low-infill draft, and test the fit in the car.
  5. Print the final part. Use full walls and the right infill, then fit it gently. Keep a spare in the glovebox for small clips.

A cracked E46 cup holder latch, for example, can be replaced with a 3D printed one in PETG or ASA for the price of one file and a few grams of filament.

Single files or the full E46 pack?

If one cup holder latch is broken, buy that file. If you own the car long term, the pack is usually the better deal. Bought one by one, the 155 E46 files are worth €1,409.45. The BMW 3 Series E46 pack costs €49.99, which is 96% less.

  • Single file: €5.99 for small clips and caps, €9.99 for normal parts, €14.99 for big parts.
  • Car pack: €49.99 for all 155 E46 files, including future fixes you do not need yet.

A word on safety: we never offer models for safety-critical parts such as brakes, steering, seat belts, airbags or structural parts. Buy those from BMW or a trusted parts supplier.

Common mistakes

  1. Printing in PLA. It looks fine on day one, then warps in the first hot week. Use PETG, ASA or ABS.
  2. Skipping a test fit. Variants differ between saloon, coupe, convertible and compact. Check the product page fitment and print a quick test before the final part.
  3. Printing clips the wrong way up. Layers across a clip arm snap. Turn the part so the layers follow the arm.
  4. Too few walls. Thin walls with high infill are weaker than thick walls with medium infill.
  5. Forcing a tight part. Small sanding or a 0.1–0.2 mm scale change fixes most tight fits. Forcing it can break the old mounting points.

FAQ

Which BMW E46 parts can I 3D print?

Mostly interior and trim plastics: clips, covers, trays, cup holders, panels, mounts, handles, trim pieces, switch blanks and brackets. Our library has 155 E46 files in total.

Do I get a physical part?

No. You buy a digital STL file. You print it yourself or send it to any local or online print shop.

What is the best filament for E46 interior parts?

ASA is the safest choice for parts in sunlight. PETG works well for caps, clips and trays out of direct sun. Avoid PLA inside the car.

Do the files fit every E46 body style?

Not always. Some files are tested on one body style, such as the convertible trunk pad. Check the fitment notes on each product page before you print.

Can I print parts I cannot find in the library?

Yes, ask us. Send a photo of the broken part through our contact page and request a model.
